April 23rd is "National Sovereignty and Children's Day" in Turkey. The world's only holiday dedicated to children, April 23rd also commemorates the establishment of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and of national sovereignty after an extraordinary struggle that the Turkish people will never forget. I'm not sure what April 23rd means to you, but I am filled with joy and excitement whenever I hear that date mentioned. I think of sovereignty-of Turkey's sovereignty. I'm reminded of our soldiers. The blood that they spilled for the sake of sovereignty wells up before my eyes. It's as if I'm living through a war. I want to express how great the hardships were under which the Grand National Assembly was held but I feel tongue-tied and can't even utter the words. It's only in my mind that I can experience what I feel. The struggle undertaken for sovereignty will not vanish from my gaze.
Suddenly a new bolt of lightning courses through my mind. I hear the sweet yelps of children. I remember that April 23rd is for them too; and now their cheerful faces, their tiny hands, their lovable gazes are fixed in my gaze instead. On this splendid day they all want to sing songs, recite poems, and shout out their happiness. And that joy is not just for Turkish children: it's for children everywhere, because April 23rd is an international holiday.
When I look at these children it occurs to me that when the day comes and we entrust our sovereignty into their hands, our minds may be at ease. I ask them about it:
"Will you cherish our national sovereignty?"
But overcome by the joy that April 23rd inspires they don't really understand the question. But I know that the day will come when they will understand. And that then they will defend our sovereignty no matter what the cost.
To sum up, I just want to say that we need to safeguard the national sovereignty that we won with such immense difficulty and we should respect today's children because they are tomorrow's adults; because the day will come when we shall have to entrust our sovereignty to them. And we should also know that the individuals who are children today will be committing themselves to that sovereignty with infinite love tomorrow and that they will never betray the trust we place in them.

23 Nisan Ulusal Egemenlik ve Çocuk bayramıDünyada çocuklar için olan tek bayram ve Türklerin unutulmaz, sıra dışı mücadelesinin sonucunda ulaşılan egemenlik, TBMM'nin kuruluşu.23 Nisan sizin için ne ifade ediyor, bileme; fakat ben 23 Nisan tarihini duyunca içim sevinç ve coşkuyla doluyor. Egemenliği, Türk egemenliğini düşünüyorum. Askerlerimiz geliyor aklıma. Onarlın egemenlik için akıttıkları kan gözümün önüne geliyor. Adeta bir savaş yaşıyorum içimde. TBMM'nin ne kadar güç bir durumda açıldığını dile getirmek istiyorum, dilim tutuluyor, ağzımdan sözcükler dökülmüyor. Sadece zihnimde yaşıyorum hissettiklerimi. Egemenlik için verilen mücadele gözümün önünden gitmiyor.
Zihnimde yeni bir şimşek çakıyor bir anda.Çocukların tatlı çığlıklarını duyuyorum. O anda hatırlıyorum 23 Nisan'ın çocuklara da hitap ettiğini. Neşeli yüzleri, minicik elleri, sevimli sevimli bakan gözleri hiç gözümün önünden gitmiyor. Hepsi de bu özel günde şarkı söylemek, şiir okumak, mutluluklarını haykırmak istiyorlar. Sadece Türk çocuklarında değil, tüm çocuklarda var bu sevinç. Çünkü uluslar arası bir bayram, 23 nisan.
Çocuklara baktıkça aklıma bir gün egemenliğimizi onlara içimiz rahat bir şekilde bırakacağımız aklıma geliyor. Bunu onlara soruyorum:
- Egemenliğimize sahip çıkacak mısınız?
Diyorum. Ama 23 nisan'ın verdiği sevinç sarhoşluğu ile anlayamıyorlar. Bir gün nasılsa anlayacaklarını biliyorum. İşte, o zaman ne pahasına olursa olsun, egemenliğimizi koruyacakları çok açık.
Sonuç olarak şunu söylemek isterim ki bin bir zorlukla mücadele ederek sahip olduğumuz milli egemenliği korumalı ve bugünün küçükleri yarının büyüklerine saygı göstermeliyiz. Çünkü bir gün egemenliği onlara emanet edeceğiz. Bunun yanında bilmeliyiz ki bugün çocuk olan kişiler yarın egemenliklerine sonsuz bir aşkla bağlanacak, onlara bıraktığımız emanete hıyanet etmeyecekleridir.
